The computer you are sitting at now and an industrial computer might not seem so different at first glance. Both include a motherboard, CPU, and hard drives, but the truth is that is where the similarities stop. Industrial computers are different from commercial desktops because they are built to function and thrive under conditions that are not electronics friendly. Let us look at some of the situations where an industrial computer would be more beneficial:
- Dirt and Humidity: Cooling fans are essential to regulating the heat of a PC and keeping dust and dirt out. Cooling fans in industrial PCs have special filters and undergo rigorous testing to ensure clean air flow and direct internal cooling.
- Shock and Vibration: High levels of vibration can damage a desktop computer. Yet, industrial computers with rugged enclosures and SSD drives can maintain performance while being subjected to continuous vibration and movement.
- Extreme Temperatures: Excessive heat/cold can affect performance and hardware lifespan. Industrial computers can support operating temperatures from –40C to 70C (-40F to 158F), allowing functionality in both extreme cold and hot applications.
- Human Element: Accidents will always happen. Industrial designed chassis can be waterproof, protecting against liquid damage to internal components and drops and collision with the ground.
Another reason to use an industrial computer is cost. While desktop computers are designed to be replaced/upgraded after a few years, industrial computers have been known to run for over a decade. The cost of maintaining an industrial computer is much lower than maintenance and replacement of desktop PCs! That said, just because industrial computers are meant to last, that does not mean they cannot be upgraded. In fact, they are more expandable than commercial PCs. They can both support the ever-changing nature of innovation, and to continue supporting legacy applications that can run for 5 or 10 years
