Travel smartBusiness travelers and other road warriors know the abuse and indignities that their laptops must endure. Few situations are more stressful than standing shoeless, luggage in hand, boarding pass in mouth, as your laptop rolls away on a conveyor. But now you can relax and take it in stride, because the dent-resistant RhinoBook™ was built for this. Inspection at airport security can do no harm to your data, and rough-handling, drops, and shakes wont damage your shock-mounted LCD. And because it is lighter and slimmer than bulky industrial laptops, working on the plane has never been easier or as worry free.
Hazardous environmentsWhere the music is flowing there may also be drinks spilling. But there's no reason to fret, because the RhinoBook™ is equipped with a spill-resistant keyboard and touchpad. Its large, wide-format, 15.4" screen lets you see more tracks at once. And with Intel® High Definition Audio onboard, and the processing power of an Intel® Core™2 Duo processor, you can blend, rip, and mix all night without skipping a beat. The RhinoBook™ plays well with other components, and is more durable and portable than all your other gear. Lab TestsDrop Tested
The RhinoBook™ was drop tested onto all 8 corners, 12 edges, and 6 faces from a minimum height of 29 inches.
To qualify as a RhinoBook™ these notebooks had to meet some tough requirements: They were designed to stand up to the kind of uncommon rough-handling that would fatally damage an ordinary laptop. This test is based on strict US military standards for equipment and transport. In accordance with the transit drop test of MIL-STD-810F, Method 516.5, Procedure IV, the laptops were dropped 26 times onto each face, edge, and corner. Each time, the RhinoBook™ fell a minimum of 29 inches onto a solid plywood and concrete surface. And each time, the RhinoBook™ remained undamaged and operational. This test recreates a fall from the edge of your desk or workbench, and matches the height and angles of impact if dropped while being carried by hand. The RhinoBook™ is protected from this abuse by a strong magnesium alloy shell and soft-rubber overmolds on each corner. Internal components are designed to absorb the shock, and not transmit it to sensitive parts like the LCD and hard drive. The General Technics RhinoBook™ also has a unique optical drive lock mechanism that secures your DVD drive. This protects valuable optical media from ejecting unexpectedly and being damaged. No other laptop on the market can compete with the performance and price of the RhinoBook™. Shock and Vibration Tested
Vibration simulation equipment and a plot showing the logrithmic sweeps
of the vibration levels during part of the test.
To simulate the conditions of transporting material off-road, over bumpy terrain, and in vehicles not designed for comfort, the military has developed a set of standards for testing durability. MIL-STD-810F, Method 514.5, Procedure I of that standard describes a test using a vibration simulator to push mission-critical equipment to its limits. Once again, the RhinoBook™ stood up to the challenge, and proved its toughness for field use. While powered on, the unit was subjected to vibrations of 0.001 g²/Hz from 1 to 200 Hz, for a duration of 1.5 hours per axis, on all 3 axes. These conditions simulate 1000 miles of truck transportation. And then, while powered off, the vibrations were boosted to 0.4 g²/Hz from 20 to 1000 Hz, for 1 hour on each axis. And once again, the RhinoBook™ held up to the abuse and functioned perfectly. The durability of the RhinoBook™ is due to its unique design. Most laptops are built with only size and weight in mind, and would quickly fail when faced with these conditions. The RhinoBook™, however, was designed for durability, strength, as well as weight and size. The hard drive and LCD are shock mounted to absorb the vibrations. And unlike ordinary laptops, the RhinoBook™ uses a flexible cable to connect the drive, so it doesn't break under the stress. Spill TestedAnother common hazard threatening portable computers is from splashes and spills. The RhinoBook™ was tested in compliance with IEC 60529 and achieved an ingress protection rating of IP31 (similar to a NEMA 2 enclosure rating). With the LCD open and the system running, all six faces are exposed to water pressure of 20psi. A sealed membrane beneath the keyboard and touchpad divert water around sensitive components. Any spilled liquid is then channeled out through a special port on the bottom. Never again will you have to worry about losing your laptop to an accidental spill. With a RhinoBook™ you can work anywhere with confidence. Images[+] Click thumbnails for larger images. All images Copyright 2008, General Technics, Inc.
